We are on a mission to make professional photography more accessible to everyone.
THE "DEATH OF PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY"
It’s important that we tackle first the threat that we face as photographers. The state of our industry is this: most photographers can’t find enough work to be full-time, with only the top percentage of photographers making a decent living from their work and charging very high rates. Moreover, high-quality cameras are becoming more accessible (particularly on smart phones) – enabling more people to take photos without working with a professional. Each of these phenomenons perpetuates the other and many photographers are projecting that this is the beginning of the end for our industry.
THE NEW ERA OF PHOTOGRAPHY
We shouldn’t make the funeral arrangements for professional photography just yet. Is high-cost, equipment and studio-dependent photography nearing the end of its rein? Possibly. But with any dying industry, the right pivot can help us start fresh and better than ever.
As photographers, we are more than just people with fancy cameras. In fact, expensive equipment is a very small part of creating a beautiful image. We are able to produce those images because of our technical and creative expertise, our ability to collaborate with clients, our resourcefulness, and our artistic subjectivity. These are qualities that no camera or piece of technology can replace.
CHEAP VS AFFORDABLE
Affordability is a large factor in changing the way people see professional photographers. And this has nothing to do with diluting the value of photographers or cheapening what we do, but rather adapting to the advances in technology.
Social media has made visual content an integral part of every person’s life. However, feeds change so often that a stunning image today is forgotten tomorrow. As a result, most people and companies cannot justify paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for a single image. What they need are photographers who can deliver high-quality photos with fewer resources, thereby making great photography more affordable.
You might be thinking, why would professional photographers lower their rates? What’s in it for us? And those are great questions. Affordable professional photography will have a domino effect on our profession, specifically on our ability to get work. Here’s how:
– Affordable photography leads to more photo shoot bookings
– More bookings means more work for photographers
– Additional work will enable more photographers to do what they love full time
WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT
For the aforementioned reasons, we created New Leaf Photos. As a commercial photographer and founder of New Leaf Photos, I’ve found that there is a need for professional photography. But what people value has nothing to do with your equipment stack or costly productions. They want to leverage your expertise and your creativity to capture their moments, their products, their events, their brands. Images that look more organic and natural are preferred over those that are highly staged and rigid. They value our ability to make those incredible compositions happen.
Know that this is not a short-term goal. We are out to change the way people view photography. We are making it so accessible that no longer will people hire photographers only for the biggest events in their lives, but rather for all events in their life. And when they do, there will be one place they can turn to for best-in-class photographers every single time – New Leaf Photos. Join the photography revolution.
